Scalp micropigmentation can make a receding or uneven hairline appear fuller, but it does not restore hair growth. The procedure uses small pigment impressions to create the visual effect of hair follicles. For people comparing hair restoration options, understanding that distinction is the starting point.
What does “hairline restoration” mean with SMP?
With SMP, restoration refers to the appearance of a hairline. Pigment is placed in a pattern that visually fills sparse areas or defines a new edge. It does not transplant follicles, change your hairline biologically or stop future hair loss.
How does SMP compare with a hair transplant?
A hair transplant relocates living hair follicles through surgery. SMP is a cosmetic pigment treatment that can create the look of closely shaved hair or add the appearance of density beneath existing hair. Some clients choose SMP after a transplant to camouflage donor scars or improve visible density, but each situation needs its own assessment.
Will my SMP hairline look natural up close?
Natural appearance depends on impression size, spacing, pigment color, the softness of the leading edge and how the temples blend. A flat dark band can look artificial. A conservative, age-appropriate design is often more convincing than the lowest or sharpest possible line.
For a deeper look at those decisions, read what makes an SMP hairline look natural.
Can SMP help if I still have some hair?
Yes, in selected cases. An artist can work with remaining hair to create a fuller visual pattern. The plan depends on hair length and where the thinning occurs. When the main concern is visible scalp between existing hairs, our density SMP service may be more relevant than a new frontal hairline.
How long does a result last?
SMP is long-lasting but not permanent in appearance. Pigment can gradually soften over time, and touch-up needs vary with skin, sun exposure, aftercare and treatment technique. SMP Masters generally discusses a possible touch-up interval of about three to five years rather than promising an exact lifespan.
How do I know what hairline would suit me?
Start with clear photographs showing your front hairline, temples and sides at your usual haircut length. A consultation should account for age, facial structure, remaining hair and the look you want to maintain.
At SMP Masters, lead artist Justin Taibi has worked in SMP since 2018. Our clinic is in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, and we welcome clients from Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island and the surrounding region.
