How to Choose an SMP Artist in NYC: 7 Questions to Ask

Justin Taibi, lead scalp micropigmentation artist at SMP Masters

Choosing a scalp micropigmentation artist is about more than finding a low price or a convenient appointment. SMP is designed to remain visible for years, so the quality of the hairline, impression size and color matching matter long after the first session.

Before committing to a clinic in New York City, ask questions that reveal how the artist plans, performs and evaluates the work.

1. Can I see healed SMP results?

Fresh pigment can appear stronger than the settled result. Ask for healed examples, ideally photographed in daylight and from more than one angle. Look at the hairline edge, temples and overall consistency rather than judging only the dramatic before-and-after contrast.

2. Who will actually perform my treatment?

Make sure the artist whose work you admire is the person doing the procedure. Ask about their years of hands-on SMP experience and whether they routinely treat your specific concern: a receding hairline, density loss, FUT/FUE scar or correction of previous SMP.

At SMP Masters, lead artist Justin Taibi has worked in SMP since 2018 and focuses on controlled placement and natural-looking results.

3. How is the hairline designed?

A natural-looking hairline should reflect facial proportions, age, existing hair and preferred haircut. Ask how the artist handles soft leading edges, temple transitions and the risk of a hairline looking too dark or straight.

Our natural hairline SMP page explains these design choices.

4. What happens if I have existing SMP or scar tissue?

Repair and scar camouflage are not interchangeable with first-time hairline treatment. Pigment retention and color can vary in previously treated or scarred skin. An experienced artist should evaluate what is present before promising a result. See our SMP repair and scar camouflage pages for more.

5. How many sessions and what aftercare are included?

Ask for the expected number of sessions, the interval between appointments and how follow-up adjustments are handled. SMP Masters commonly spaces sessions about 14 days apart and advises keeping the treated area dry for the first five days, with instructions tailored to the treatment.

6. Does the quoted price match my treatment needs?

A fair quote should reflect the treatment area, existing hair, complexity and number of sessions. Be cautious about judging providers solely by the lowest advertised price. Our NYC SMP cost guide explains common pricing factors.

7. Does the clinic show you realistic expectations?

No SMP artist should guarantee a flawless result in every lighting condition or promise that a scar will disappear completely. The right consultation explains limitations, healing and how your existing hair may change over time.
